How the Board Works
Vashon Park District is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners who are elected every four years. Each candidate runs for a specific open commissioner's position.
To qualify for Park District Commissioner, a candidate must:
Be a Vashon-Maury Island resident
Be a legally registered voter
Not have a criminal record or conviction of a felony
Employees of the Vashon Park District are precluded from serving on the Board of Commissioners.
A Letter from the 2010 Commission Chair
I have the pleasure of chairing the Park District’s Board of Commissioners for the second consecutive year. Last year Vashon Park District celebrated its 25th anniversary and made some significant accomplishments:
We opened a public restroom at the Village Green.
We negotiated an Interlocal Agreement with the School District in which the Park District assumes responsibility for maintaining all community used fields, regardless of ownership. This will provide for more efficient use of manpower and equipment between the two districts resulting in a savings to you. Also, the Park District assumed responsibility for scheduling all activities on the fields.
We negotiated and signed a land lease for a $6 million expansion and remodel of the King County library at Ober Park. The design phase will begin early this year with construction starting in Spring of 2011.
Most significantly, you approved a six year levy which will provide funding for Vashon Park District to continue providing the level of service you deserve and the programs you desire.
In 2010 the Park District will continue to enhance and expand the services we provide to the community. These projects are:
Ground-breaking on a $1 million multiple-use field for baseball, soccer, football and lacrosse at the old Vashon Elementary School site.
Construction of a covered equestrian arena at Paradise Ridge Park.
The Park District will assume ownership and full responsibility for the King County swimming pool.
As is the case with most major capital projects, they are financed primarily through grants and contributions. Your levy funds will be used to maintain them.
So, thank you again for your support in passing the levy. Be assured that the Park District staff and Commissioners are fiscally prudent and will work daily to ensure the community continues to receive maximum benefit for your dollars.
